Skilled volunteers from the Devon Wildlife Trust recently cleared glades and paths around the Cookbury Poorlands wood near Brandis Corner to allow more light penetration into the wood for the ebenfit of wild flowers and associated woodland butterflies.

Wildlife, communities and local economies are reaping the benefits of England’s new Nature Improvement Areas, according to a report published today. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: “A healthy environment and a healthy economy go hand in hand. These Nature Improvement Areas show how protecting our precious wildlife and outstanding landscapes can help grow our £30 billion rural tourism industry and create more jobs for hardworking people as part of our long term economic plan.”

On 5th October the NIA team led a comunitiy walk around Cookbury Poorlands, a four acre woodland beside the village of Cookbury. 15 people attended as were pleased to find that such a wonderful habitat exists on their doorstep.

At the Salar Gallery, Hatherleigh, from 17th July to 13th September, there is an exhibition of paintings and drawings – of lakes, rivers, boats & figurative work – by artist and retired teacher Peter Baker. This exhibition of Peter’s work includes many new paintings and drawings informed by the Meeth reserve - which opened in 2013 and is situated at the heart of the Northern Devon Nature Improvement Area.
